preventative measures regular vacuuming immediate spill removal intermediate maintenance periodic cleaning
There are basically two components that are essential to any effective carpet maintenance program. These elements include vacuuming and spot cleaning. Vacuuming is the most important aspect of the cleaning cycle, as a regular vacuuming schedule will contribute significantly to the longevity and appearance retention of your wool carpet. Heavy traffic areas should receive a daily vacuum, and medium foot traffic areas should have a twice weekly schedule in place.

Another aspect to consider is vacuuming technique. Improper or hastily performed vacuuming is a waste of time and effort, and ultimately, will not produce the desired results in terms of protecting your wool carpet. Thorough vacuuming requires that the machine move slowly back and forth over a specific area several times, and for heavy traffic areas, at least three to five times is recommended. You should also never use a vacuum bag whose contents are in excess of 50%, as this will also compromise the effectiveness of the cleaning process.

Vacuum cleaners basically fall in to two main types. The first is just simple suction, and the second is suction plus a revolving brush and beater bar. When deciding on which type of vacuum to utilize, you must first consider the type of construction in your wool carpet. For cut pile rugs, an upright heavy duty with rotating brush and beater bars would be your best choice. Suction vacuums work well with loop pile construction, as the rotating brush and beater bars may cause some fuzzing of the yarn.

Your maintenance program should be initiated upon installation, and should continue through the lifetime of your product. Consistent attention and adherence to this process will ensure that the benefits of your cleaning program are maximized.
