preventative measures regular vacuuming immediate spill removal intermediate maintenance periodic cleaning
Periodic cleaning frequency will be dependent upon the effectiveness of the daily and intermediate maintenance routines. There are two recommended methods for deep cleaning wool carpets.

The first method is Dry Foam Extraction. A detergent foam is applied and brushed deeply in the carpet fibers. Immediately upon application, this foam should be removed by wet vacuum suction. This process breaks down the foam and collects both the soil and moisture into a tank. The machine should be passed over the carpet in straight parallel lines at the rate of approximately 12 feet per minute.

This system offers the advantage of utilizing a small amount of water, so therefore reducing the risk of damage to wool fibers from excessive moisture. This is particularly important on woven carpets. Drying time is also quicker than with the hot water extraction method as follows.

Hot water extraction is essentially a hot detergent solution (maximum 150 degrees), that is sprayed through a nozzle directly into the carpet pile. Extraction of the loosened dirt is followed by a suction slot located behind the nozzle. The benefit of this particular method is that it removes deeply embedded dirt, however it is technically more difficult to operate successfully. Overwetting can occur, and a longer drying time is required.
